40 students from 5 different countries have now successfully completed the CLEO course on memory and commemoration in Europe. This course, offered in the fall of 2024, critically explored how Europe remembers its past, focusing on the ways in which different nations commemorate historical events.
The course was offered as a collaborative effort by universities involved in the CLEO project across Europe. Through a combination of virtual lectures and group discussions, students examined a range of topics—from the memorialisation of wartime events to the public debates around statues and historical sites.
Students worked in groups to present a series of creative work on commemorative practices in Europe, and reflected on the concepts discussed in the courses. Many of these projects took the form of digital exhibitions, short documentaries, and interactive maps, highlighting the diverse ways in which history is remembered and contested. The students worked across cultural and national perspectives, and showed us how rich European collaboration can be!
